Effective Health Care Program Update: New Interactive Decision Aid for Men With Clinically Localized Prostate Cancer
AHRQ’s Effective Health Care Program is pleased to announce the release of a new Web-based self-directed patient decision aid titled, Knowing Your Options: A Decision Aid for Men With Clinically Localized Prostate Cancer.
This interactive tool is designed to help men, who have been recently diagnosed with clinically localized prostate cancer learn more about prostate anatomy; what it means to have clinically localized prostate cancer; treatment options, including the choice to not begin treatment immediately; and information about the treatment options. Patients who complete the decision aid can save and print an information summary to share with their doctors.
Experts in the International Patient Decision Aid Standards (IPDAS) guided the development of the decision aid, which was based on the research published in 2008 by the Effective Health Care Program titled, Comparative Effectiveness of Therapies for Clinically Localized Prostate Cancer and more recently published evidence. We believe that this new decision aid will serve as an important tool for ongoing education and advocacy work in the prostate cancer community.
This decision aid is the latest from AHRQ’s growing library of free education materials that present scientific evidence on various health conditions so consumers and clinicians can learn more about the benefits and risks of different treatment options and make informed decisions.
